- Direct Connection Internet Installer for Windows 3.11
- Installation Guide v2
- Updated 10/01/97
-
- The installer disks include a complete set of Internet applications and
- a Winsock (the program that connects your computer into the Internet).
-
- This software is only suitable for Windows 3.1, 3.11 or Windows for
- Workgroups. It cannot be used with Windows 95. If you are using Windows
- 95 we would advise the use of the in- built Internet software, Dial-Up
- Networking
-
- 1. Starting Out
-
- IMPORTANT: If you have a previous version of Microsoft Internet Explorer
- installed on your computer you will need to remove this before
- installing the Direct Connection Internet Installer v2. If you have not
- ever installed a copy of Microsoft Internet Explorer then you can
- install our disks straight away.
-
- IMPORTANT: If you have the previous version of the Direct Connection
- software currently installed, comprising of Trumpet Winsock and Netscape
- etc. you will also want to remove this before installing our new version
- 2 software.
-
- To install from the downloaded executable file, go into Windows. Start
- up File Manager and locate the downloaded file (called dcinst2.exe).
- Double-click the file to start the installation. The program will
- firstly extract some temporary files into c:\temp, click 'Unzip' to do
- this. Once this has completed, the main installation process will begin.
-
- 2. The Installation Process
-
- The Install program will first ask you which directory you want to
- install your Internet applications into. We recommend that you use the
- default (C:\DIRCON). The Installer will then go on to copy all
- necessary files onto your hard disk. A progress bar is shown whilst the
- files are copied.
-
- After installing 100% of all the files, you will be asked to enter your
- Network ID. You Network ID is listed on the æaccount detailsÆ sheet,
- and is the name you chose for your account. This should be entered all
- in lowercase characters.
-
- You are then prompted for a full name. You should enter your full name
- for attaching to outgoing messages and Usenet news postings. You should
- include your first and last names. This can be entered in a mixture of
- upper and lowercase letters.
-
- The installer will now report that it is setting/creating ini entries.
- The final part of the installation will ask to modify your autoexec.bat
- file. Allow it to do this by clicking æsaveÆ.
-
- The installation is now complete and will report that you need to
- restart your machine before using the software. Click ærestartÆ to
- restart your machine now. Once your machine restarts you will have an
- extra program manager group called æDirect ConnectionÆ containing all
- the Internet Installer programs.
-
- 3. Making Your First Connection
-
- Before you make your first connection you will need to tell the software
- about your modem and which telephone number your wish to connect on.
- Double-click the æConnect to Direct ConnectionÆ icon. Select the
- æPropertiesÆ button. Displayed firstly is the Area Code and Telephone
- number. If you are able to get a local call to the 0181 London area code
- then leave the number as :
- Area Code Telephone number
- 0181 2652211
-
- If you cannot get a local call to the London area then you will need to
- set the following telephone number:
- Area Code Telephone number
- 0845 0798200
-
- Leave the country code as United Kingdom. The connection preferences can
- be left at the default settings. Click the æmodemÆ tab. By default a
- Standard Modem on COM1 is installed. We will need to change this so the
- software knows the make and model of your modem and which COM port it
- is on. Click æChange ModemÆ.
-
- Windows will now try to detect your modem. Click æNextÆ when you are
- ready to continue. Windows will now look for your modem and should
- report back what it believes to be the make and model and which COM
- port it is connected to. If Windows cannot detect the make of modem it
- will install it as æStandard ModemÆ. Accept the modem that Windows
- detects and click æNextÆ to complete the installation of the modem.
- Click æFinishÆ to finish installing a modem. Click æOKÆ to finish the
- connection properties.
-
- The æConnect ToÆ box should still be displayed. Ensure against User Name
- you have the your correct Network ID filled in. Against Password type
- in the password on your account details sheet, the password we have
- assigned you. This should be entered all in lowercase letters, ensure
- you do not have CAPS LOCK turned on when you are entering the password.
- Phone number should read the correct number your modem will be
- dialling. Dialling from should read æDefault LocationÆ. Now click
- æcloseÆ to and save any settings that have changed.
-
- You are now ready to connect to the Internet !
-
- 4. Connecting and Disconnecting
-
- To connect to the Internet, double-click on the æConnect to Direct
- ConnectionÆ icon in the Program Manager group called æDirect
- ConnectionÆ. This will start up the æConnect ToÆ box. Ensure all
- details are correct such as User Name and Password, then press
- æConnectÆ.
-
- Once you are connected, the program will minimise to an icon at the
- bottom of your desktop. You should see it called æConnected to Direct
- ConnectionÆ. Double-clicking this will show the duration and speed of
- your connection.
-
- Once you are connected, you can start any other Internet applications
- (such as Internet Explorer for Web Browsing, Eudora for sending and
- receiving electronic mail, CuteFTP for FTPing files). For information
- on using these programs you can read the help files included in the
- Direct Connection group. Further information is also available from our
- web site (details at the end of this document).
-
- When you have finished accessing the Internet, you simply double-click
- the æConnected to Direct ConnectionÆ icon and click æDisconnectÆ. This
- should cause your modem to end the session. Important: check that
- your modem has in fact dropped the line. You do not want to incur
- unnecessary telephone charges.
-
- 5. Common Problems
-
- Please check the following common problems and their solutions BEFORE
- contacting the helpdesk. If you do contact the helpdesk you should
- ensure you have made a note of any error messages that might be
- displayed and describe them to Technical Support as clearly as you can.
-
- No list of modems or country codes appear in the Internet dialler
-
- You may find that when you try to detect your make of modem that the
- dialler does not have a list of modems to choose from. This will happen
- if two lines in your autoexec.bat file have not been processed. For
- example if you have an autoexec.bat file that allows you to choose
- multiple configurations on bootup, then it is likely that the two lines
- will not get processed.
-
- To ensure that these variables are being set, edit your autoexec.bat and
- move the already existing lines that state:
- set ieppp=c:\dircon\iexplore
- set pctcp=c:\dircon\iexplore\pctcp.shv
- to the very top of your autoexec.bat file. This will ensure that these
- lines get processed. Then do a restart and you should now find the list
- of modems.
-
- Cannot find winsock.dll appears when running Internet applications
-
- You must FULLY reboot your computer, IE exit from Windows and turn the
- computer off and then on (or use the reboot button) after installing
- the software. The PATH command that instructs your computer where to
- find winsock.dll is not executed until you reboot.
-
- The Internet Dialler gives the response Cannot initialise modem
-
- Either: your modem is turned off or it is not properly connected to the
- computer, or you have selected the wrong COM port in the internet
- dialler. Try redetecting the modem again by using the æChange
- ModemÆfunction in Properties/Modem.
-
- The Internet Dialler gives the response The dial-in connection was lost
-
- This is most likely that you have entered an incorrect User Name or
- Password. In the initial æConnect ToÆ box ensure that your User Name is
- entered correctly. On your account details sheet is listed as Network
- ID. Also ensure that the password is correct, try re-entering this from
- the account details sheet. Both these settings should be lowercase,
- ensure you do not have caps lock turned on when typing them in.
-
- When clicking a æmailtoÆ link on a web page, a mail program is not
- found.
-
- The current version of Internet Explorer does not support the mailto
- link correctly, this will be corrected in the next version of Explorer.
-
- I have a problem when receiving attachments by email in Eudora
-
- It is possible that a bug may have occured which causes Eudora not to
- download attachments correctly. Start up Eudora and go to the
- Tools/Options menu, then the Attachments category. Ensure that the
- attachment directory is a valid one. A bug unfortunately may occur which
- sets an incorrect attachment directory. This will be corrected in the
- next version of our software.
-
- For further information you can access our web site. Start up Internet
- Explorer and enter the following address http://www.dircon.net Here
- you will find a technical support area that has guides and useful
- information on many programs.
